Good News Friday: Infrastructure Dreams
Let’s spend some #GoodNewsFriday time discussing water lines! Stamford’s water distribution system is very old and very problematic. Some water mains are decrepit cast iron pipes that date to 1918. Our system is also very large. Due to our city layout relative to current population (remember my discussion that we’ve got blocks upon blocks ripe for redevelopment?), we must maintain twice as much water infrastructure as we currently need. Repairs are constantly required and service to our customers is impacted far more than anyone wants.
But remember, this is good news! The City of Stamford has worked for a half decade on a massive $20 million upgrade to our water system. As we’ve long promised, the last piece of the puzzle will be to invest the excess funds in replacing water lines. Well, this past Monday night, the Stamford City Council voted to allocate just over $1 million in remaining funds to construction on water system improvements.
I’ll talk more about this as our engineers formalize the proposed improvements, but this will address some of our biggest problems and constant headaches. It will also allow us to implement permanent improvements on streets that have terrible water lines. This won’t fix every problematic water main in town, but it will improve our service tremendously and it will be a major step towards infrastructure that is the envy of communities across America!
