#GoodNewsFriday: Building Community
Two weeks ago, I brought to you good news about a spontaneous homecoming weekend Cruise Night. I was cautiously optimistic that folks would turn out, but when I drove up to the square that Saturday night, practically every parking spot was full. There was a big crowd at the Grand Theatre and the marquee’s neon lit up the evening. A miniature car show broke out and classics and muscle cars had their hoods up, on display. Motorcycles cruised in. People were lined up to buy concessions. More than a few folks had their lawn chairs out, relaxing and enjoying the sights.
Once the cruise kicked off, Stamford’s downtown streets were PACKED. I’m sure many people in the crowd had stress and anxiety elsewhere in their lives. But on that Saturday night, thanks to the great work of Donna Lefevre, Greg Hagerman, and their sponsors, all those folks just enjoyed themselves and enjoyed a feeling of true community.
Stamford peaked in population (at least so far) many years before I was born, but I can only imagine that it felt like this on a busy Saturday night in those days. Let’s keep up with great ideas like this, Stamford. Good things are happening and ever better things are on the horizon.
“Good News Friday” is a weekly feature spotlighting positive news and activities in the #StamfordTexas community as a part of our quest to build a #BetterStamford.
