#GoodNewsFriday: Cattails Be Gone
You may have noticed some recent activity around the pond at Harmon Park!
Over recent years, the pond has steadily been overtaken by cattails. A few months ago, the City of Stamford had them sprayed with a safe aquatic herbicide and the results were very positive. Several weeks ago, you might have noticed the City public works crew removing the dead vegetation with equipment and by hand. Some of this vegetation was stacked by the pond to dry out (before the rain). It will shortly be hauled away. Believe it or not, but fish have been spotted in the pond! We hope to do some additional stocking in the near future.
Regular maintenance will be required to ensure the cattails don’t overtake the pond again, but we’ve made a big step in the right direction. Our next steps are to address the silting of the pond on the south side and improve the aesthetics of the pond banks. Personally, I think some native grasses, pollinators, and wildflowers might look nice! Stay tuned, because we’ve got some other ideas in the works as well!
