#GoodNewsFriday: Let’s Garden!
We’ve spent the last several Fridays discussing the spring-like renewal that is cascading through our community’s parks. There are few things in the world that signify the arrival of spring like a garden coming to life! All over town, gardeners are planting a new crop for summer’s harvest, from the amateurish (me, it’s me, I’m talking about me) to the seasoned pros.
It is a troubling paradox in America that rural communities often struggle with access to fresh, affordable meat and produce. Luckily, we have some local folks working hard to improve that access. The Jones Haskell Farmers Market and our other local farm-fresh vendors are gearing up for another season of fresh produce, meat, and more to our local citizens. If you’ve never bought from our local farm vendors, I encourage you to make 2022 the season. It’s a great way to eat healthy, eat local, and support local entrepreneurs who can help put food on your table.
I also want to make this an interactive post today. What are you growing in your garden? In addition to the usual suspects like tomatoes, okra, squash, and peppers, my family has added eggplant, radishes, beets, and collards (results TBD). Do you aspire to expand your garden? Do you need input from an experienced gardener? Maybe you can connect in the comments below! I have many dreams for Stamford, but growing our local food culture is near the top of the list. Happy farmers market shopping and happy gardening to all!
