#GoodNewsFriday: Rain
West Texas is a dry country. Precipitation often comes erratically or in an unpleasant format. This can be a challenge for a community that depends on dryland agriculture as the basis of much of its economy. 2022 has been our driest year since the frightful 2011 and our suffering fields reflect that.
When the rain came hard this week after several disappointing misses, it was an easy choice of good news to share! Not everyone was so fortunate (see the “erratic” description above), but parts of Stamford and the surrounding countryside received upwards of 3 inches. The Paint Creek watershed received a soaking rain, filling dry tanks and pushing some water to Lake Stamford. It also appears we will be able to pump water from our California Creek diversion project for the first time in several years.
So when I received this photo of a flooded Harmon Park, courtesy of Audra Arendall and Jeffrey Pippin, I was elated. We’ve got some erosion and sidewalk damage at the park to address in the coming days, but you know what? I’ll take it. Rain is a good thing.
