#GoodNewsFriday: SAVE THE MARQUEE!
Because Good News Friday is purely a Stamford-focused post, I am phasing it off at West of 98 and moving it to BetterStamford.Substack.Com, a newsletter dedicated solely to Stamford news. If you wish to continue receiving Good News Friday emails, please subscribe there! Like West of 98, it is a free newsletter. I will continue to post Good News Friday on my Facebook and Instagram accounts. What will replace Good News Friday on the West of 98 newsletter schedule? Stay tuned to find out!
Several months ago, the marquee on the downtown square went kaput. The Stamford Chamber of Commerce set out to replace it with something befitting Stamford’s history and the new era of progress and investment that is underway.
Do you remember the old marquee from the pre-digital age, blue and white and adorned with the message “WELCOME TO STAMFORD”? I do! It was removed amidst downtown street construction in the 1990s and it has sat on the trash heap ever since. Much like the Hill Valley citizens in “Back to the Future” who eagerly sought to save the clock tower, the Stamford Chamber is going to SAVE THE MARQUEE!
Despite years of disuse, it remains in remarkably good shape and with some hard work and money, it will soon return to life with a high-tech video board in its center. Check out the Chamber’s announcement for all the details and how you can contribute to this project. As Stamford moves towards a new heyday, a blast from our town’s glorious past will greet visitors for decades to come!
