#GoodNewsFriday: Streets Matter
Along with water and sewer service, streets are where a citizen interacts most frequently with city government. The quality of those interactions will influence on a person’s perception of that government.
Repairing streets is simply not as easy as “go pave a street.” New paving is extremely expensive. Many streets are underlaid by water and/or sewer lines that are over a century old or are in poor condition. It is a poor use of your tax dollars to spend $50,000 (or more!) repaving just a single block only to dig it up a short time later to repair a water leak. As our current water project finishes and as we continue to receive new stats and federal funds for water/sewer infrastructure, we will replace the worst lines, which gives us an opportunity to then repave those streets.
Meanwhile, our crew led by Pete Perez works hard to repair potholes every week. Pete continuously studies the best methods of repair that will withstand traffic and moisture. Our 2022-23 budget process will kick off in the coming weeks. In that process, we will allocate more money to street repair and to new, better equipment that will help do the job better and more efficiently. Street repairs matter to you. They matter to me. And we will continue to work on them tirelessly until we are all satisfied.
