#GoodNewsFriday: Third Place Success
Summer is winding down. As of this week, the pool season has come to a close at the Stamford City Pool. Today, I want to share some remarkable facts about the 2022 pool season, provided by our pool manager Luke Thane. Our pool welcomed 5,096 patrons over a two-month run. That’s an average of over 125 patrons each day the pool was open! Not only that, but the pool hosted 20 different special events: “midnight madness,” water aerobics, family nights, and more. It was also reserved for over 40 private parties. This provided employment to 14 staff members, which were primarily high school and college-aged employees.
2022 was likely the busiest year in the pool’s modern history and we are very proud of that. City pools are a vital third place, a community gathering space open and welcoming to all. Luke is hanging up his whistle after almost a decade as a pool employee and then as manager, but he and I are in discussion with candidates to carry on the pool’s growth in 2023 and beyond.
This year, the City made a historic financial investment into the pool. Thanks to Luke’s hard work and his vision for our master plan, that investment and our success in 2022 are only a beginning of even greater things to come!
