#GoodNewsFriday: Tiny Time
It’s time to bring tiny houses to Stamford!
Several months ago, we set out to make Stamford welcoming to “tiny houses.” This catch-all term describes smaller residences—some are funky and eclectic, while others are simply small and reminiscent of older generations of houses. Stamford’s zoning law did not allow for this style of residence.
Our City Council wanted to make this a simple zoning change, without added bureaucracy. Accordingly, on Monday night, we approved an ordinance defining “tiny houses” as any residence under 1,000 square feet) and permitting tiny houses in all zones except for the “Single Family-1” (SF-1) zone. SF-1 is shown in yellow on this city map. You can zoom closer and download the map here: betterstamford.substack.com/p/zoning
SF-1 comprises the most heavily-populated areas of town, with limited space for new development. As development takes shape, we will consider additional zoning changes, but we believe this is a great step towards attracting growth and much needed new housing to town. This ordinance will take effect at the end of May, so come build with us!
