This makes me want to plant a Sequoia. Probably not feasible in zone 5. I just finished Jayber Crow and am jumping on the Berry fan wagon. I'm also a big Jane Austen fan and she's convinced me with her novels that I am also in need of an "avenue of limes." Really I just want to plant a literary forest/garden all around my house. Great essay, thank you! 😊
Well, I could re-quote many lines of your article here, but among my favorites — “We do not know how to think about things that we cannot measure.” The transcendent, the relational, the philosophical…. To so many they seem less-than-real and thus less-than-useful, without the ability to quantify them.
Big Berry fan here. One day, would enjoy visiting your town!
Hats off to you James, that was splendid. One of the best pieces I have read on Mr. Berry. Full stop.
The sequoia framing was genius and memorable.
I agree. I will be saving this piece as a pithy way to introduce people to Berry!
