James, incredibly you answered a question that I had been pondering (alas, not the potholes) - affiliate book links that are not Amazon! I am currently working on a recommended reading page and was wondering what seller to link; you have solved my problem:) Thanks! Coming from Switzerland, with lots of local initiatives and engagement, your article rings very true. Did you know that in some cantons, when it concerns local matters, people still vote by hand in the town square? Thanks for writing, James :)

Thank you! I have wanted to do affiliate links for a while, but I wanted to avoid the Amazon beast, especially after discovering the positive impacts of Bookshop. I'm not sure how long Bookshop has had an affiliate program but I noticed it on the website about a month ago. You have to sign up and then get approved, but that process was very simple. I hope it works for you!

The downtown vote sounds fantastic, talk about true democracy in action! I don't always poll the citizens, but I think it is so important to let them know what we are doing and why we are doing it, so even if they didn't cast a vote in the town square, they still feel part of the process.

I do wish the Texas legislature would read and absorb your words. It seems like every session over the last decade or so more and more laws have been passed that undermine local control.

I couldn't agree more. I see undermining local control as removing even more of the agency that our communities possess to chart our own course for the future. Rural revitalization is a difficult task and it will be even more difficult without that agency.

There are a few staffers, lobbyists, and aspiring electeds who read my newsletters, so hopefully my ideas can slowly seep into the bloodstream.
